The film i have chosen to discuss conventions of a short film is the film :

Dont look at your phone

Convention

Evidence in Film

Impact on Audience

Genre - The Genre of this short film ‘ Don't look a your phone’ is Horror

Evidence shown from the ominous voice at 0.22 - 0.27.

This gives the impression that there is a hidden evil spirit within the phone.

Storyline - The storyline is a very basic storyline which uses the Todorov theory, this could be due to lack of budget and finances.

However the story line is very limited and would have been better if it had a twist to it as the audience would have liked to understand the purpose of the phone and why she shouldn't have looked at it.

Stages of the Todorov Theory-

Equilibrium - 0.27-1.30

Disruption - 2:00 - 2:52

Recognition - 0.27

Resolution - 3:32-3:48

New Equilibrium - 2:00 - 2:52

Throughout the short film the storyline gives off a very basic understanding, the audience wants to be eager and find out more.

Examples of this would be.

  • When the main character was staring at the film.

Character - In this short film there were only two characters, however the main character in this short film is the girl.

The main character is the woman, who can be seen from the start to end.

The woman on the couch with the phone.

The audience can easily identify who the main character is.

Emotional- In this short film there is not much emotion expressed, however towards the end the boyfriend expresses his emotions. The overall emotion in this short film is supposed to be terror.

Emotions that can be seen and identified within this short film are:

  • The boyfriends reaction towards the end of the short film.

The impact this has on the audience is just that the audience will feel less emotions and feelings towards the short film itself as it is very basic and does not have much emotion included.
